What types of things do we invest in?

We look at all asset classes: cash, guarantees, fixed income, public equity, private equity, venture capital and real estate depending on the purpose of the investment. For PRI’s we have different criteria: Financial return is not a primary purpose of making a below-market mission investment. PRI’s are strictly defined by the IRS and are made primarily to further our charitable goals. They also are made across all asset classes in the form of loans, loan guarantees, cash deposits and equity investments. If a project is directly related to our core objectives of sustainable innovation we fund early stage entities and low profit socially oriented companies (L3C’s).

What is Impact Investing?

Impact investments are investments we make to further our philanthropic goals. There are two types: Mission-related investments (MRI’s) are part of managing our endowment at normal market rates of return and have a positive social or environmental impact while contributing to our long-term financial stability and growth. Program Related Investments (PRI’s) are designed to achieve specific program objectives while they may earn a below-market financial return.
